Chip Shot - Improve Your Golf Scores
The chip shot can drastically help you improve your golf
score. You just need to know when to use it and how to
execute it properly.
The chip shot is always played from just of the green.
Obviously, if you're right on the fringe of the green and you
have a good surface to work with putting would be a safer
choice. If not, use the chip shot.
The club you should be using really depends on the distance
from the ball to the hole. You could use anything from a 5
iron to a sand wedge. To find the best club for you to use,
practice your chip shot often with different clubs. This will
give you a good feel for how far the ball flies and rolls with
different clubs and swing weights.
Keep in mind what you're trying to accomplish when using a
chip shot. You're trying to get the ball up in the air and land
it, as quickly as possible, on the putting green to allow it to
roll to the hole.
When executing the chip shot, there are two component to
master: Address and Execution.
In chipping, you’ll need to have the right set up for the
address.
Take a slightly open stance with your body aimed just left of
the target. Shift just over half of your weight to your left foot
(if you're right handed) to set your weight forward of the ball
and aim the club face directly at your target.
Keep in mind that the chip shot is characterized by inactive
hands and a constant hand position throughout the stroke.
Hold your left arm and the club in a straight line. This will
keep you left wrist straight and you'll have a slight bend in
your right wrist. Your palms should be facing each other and
your hands should be slightly forward of the ball at address.
Now that you have the right set up, it's time to execute.
Turn your hips to the rear. Don't worry about your arms as
they will automatically follow your body through this turn.
Your shoulders, arms, hands and your club should work
together as one. Remember to keep your hand position and
wrist constant throughout the entire shot and finish with your
golf club low to the ground.
Practice this shot often with different clubs and you will
begin to see an improvement in your golf score.
